 “본이 됩시다”  제가 예전에 교회를 개척하러 떠나기 전에 평생을 목회하셨던 작은 외할아버지를 찾아뵈었습니다. 그때 할아버지께서 저에게 3가지 충고를 하셨습니다. 첫째는 교인들과 절대로 금전적인 관계를 갖지 말라 둘째 성도들과 불화가 생겼을 때에는 무조건 잘못했다고 말하라(교인들과 시시비비를 가릴 경우에 결국에는 그 교인은 교회를 떠날 것이고 그 여파는 모두 목사의 책임이 되기 때문이다) 그리고 세 번째는 여자 성도들과 가까이 하지 말라는 말씀이었습니다. 작은 외할아버지의 그 말씀은 지금도 제 머릿속에 생생하게 남아있습니다. 작은 외할아버지께서 평생 목회하시면서 깨달은 교훈 이었기에 제가 목회할 때마다 이러한 상황이 생기면 그때마다 할아버지의 가르침이 기억이 나곤 합니다. 오늘 본문의 말씀은 사도 바울이 그가 아들처럼 여겼던 디모데에게 보내는 서신 중에 일부분입니다. 바울은 나이 어린 디모데가 목회하는데 많은 어려운 점이 있을 것을 염려하면서도 성도들에게 본이 될 것을 당부하고 있습니다. 본(本)이라는 말을 한자로 보면, 나무 목(木)자와 한 일(一)로 이루어졌습니다. 어찌 된 일인지 이 한자가 그리스도의 십자가를 형상하였다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 한자는 원래 상형문자로 그 형태로 뜻을 표현하는 문자입니다. 나무에 사람이 달린 모습이 이 근본 본(本)자입니다. 그러므로 본이 되라는 것은 곧 십자가의 삶을 살라는 것입니다. 우리 모두 그리스도 예수를 본받는 십자가의 삶을 통해서 세상 사람들이 우리를 본받아 살게하는 영향력을 발휘할 수 있기를 바랍니다.       "Let Us Be an Example" Before I left to plant a church, I visited my younger maternal grandfather, who had spent his entire life in ministry. At that time, he gave me three pieces of advice. First, never engage in financial dealings with church members. Second, if you have a conflict with a member, always take the blame (because if you get into a dispute over right and wrong, that person will eventually leave the church, and the aftermath will all fall on the pastor’s shoulders). Third, avoid getting too close to female church members. His words are still vividly etched in my memory. Since these were lessons my younger maternal grandfather learned through a lifetime of ministry, I often remember his advice whenever I encounter similar situations in my own pastoral journey. Today’s Scripture passage is part of a letter that the Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, whom he regarded as a son. Though he was concerned that young Timothy would face many challenges in ministry, Paul urged him to be an example to the believers. The Korean word for "example" (本) comes from the Chinese character , which is made up of the character for "tree" (木) and a single horizontal stroke ‘one’(一). Interestingly, this character can be seen as symbolizing the cross of Christ. Chinese characters were originally pictographic, designed to express meaning through form—and the image of a person hanging on a tree resembles the character 本. Therefore, to "be an example" is to live a life of the cross. May we all, by following Christ Jesus and living the life of the cross, become people whose lives inspire others to follow our example.

“부활의 소망을 바라며...”  영국의 런던에 에드워드 모트라는 사람이 있었습니다. 그는 고아라서 어린 나이에 가구 공장에서 일을 하며 살았습니다. 일을 마치고 돌아갈 곳도, 또 따뜻하게 맞아주는 사람이 없었기에 그는 런던 거리를 쏘다니기 일쑤였습니다. 그러던 어느 날, 모트는 한 교회에 무심코 들어가게 되었습니다. 그곳에서 그는 목사님의 말씀을 듣고 은혜를 받았습니다. 세상에 믿고 의지할 사람이 아무도 없는 줄 알았는데 말씀을 통해서 예수 그리스도께서 함께하심을 알게 된 것이었습니다. 그때부터 모트는 주님을 위해서 열심히 일했습니다. 그러다 보니 가구 공장의 직공에서 사장까지 되었습니다. 너무나 감사해서 그는 성령께서 인도하시는대로 글을 쓰기 시작했습니다. 이렇게 만들어진 찬송이 우리가 부르는 찬송가 488장, “이 몸의 소망 무엔가 우리 주 예수뿐일세. 우리 주 예수 밖에는 믿을 이 아주 없도다. 굳건한 반석이시니 그 위에 내가 서리라. 그 위에 내가 서리라.”입니다. 어린 시절 고아로 희망없이 살던 삶속에서 도시를 방황하며 살았으나 목사님의 설교에 은혜를 입어 소망을 품은 에드워드 모트의 삶이야 말로 부활의 삶이 아니겠습니까! 고아로 그렇게 평생 살다가 가야 할 삶이었지만 그가 주님의 은혜를 깨닫고 그 아름답고 능력있는 찬송곡을 만들므로 만민에게 자신의 곡을 널리 알리게 된 것이 바로 부활의 삶이 아니겠습니까! 요즘처럼 살기 힘들고 어려운 때도 없었는 줄 압니다. 그러나 힘들고 어려워도 주님의 은혜안에서 다시 살아갈 용기와 소망을 품을 수 있는 그런 부활주일이 될 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.           "Looking to the Hope of the Resurrection..." There was a man named Edward Mote in London, England. He was an orphan and had to work at a furniture factory from a young age. After work, he had nowhere to go and no one to warmly welcome him, so he often wandered the streets of London. Then one day, Mote happened to step into a church. There, he heard the pastor's sermon and was deeply touched by God’s grace. He had thought there was no one in the world he could trust or rely on, but through the message, he came to know that Jesus Christ was with him. From that moment on, Mote worked zealously for the Lord. In time, he rose from a factory worker to the owner of the furniture business. Out of deep gratitude, he began to write hymns as he was led by the Holy Spirit. One of those hymns is the one we now sing as Hymn #368: "My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name. On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand." Isn’t Edward Mote’s life, which began as a hopeless orphan wandering the city but was transformed through grace and filled with hope after hearing a sermon, truly a resurrection life? Though he could have remained an orphan all his life, by realizing the Lord's grace and creating such a beautiful and powerful hymn that is now known and sung by people everywhere—this indeed is the life of resurrection, is it not? I know there has rarely been a time as difficult and challenging as today. But even in hardship, I hope this Easter can be a time when we gain courage and embrace hope again through the grace of our Lord.
